The Douro - valley is still a secret among destinations in Portugal and even though it is one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in Europe. Between Peso da Regua, Lamego and Vila Nova de Foz Coa you can in a breathtaking nature individually, away from mass tourism, you can discover the Port wine region.
The cultural hot spots like the Mateus Palace in Vila Real or the petroglyphs in the Coa-valley is worth the trip. But most of all nature lovers and wine lovers will find in the Douro valley recreation and enjoyment alike. The wine region of Port wine is full of history and a visit to at least one winery is for every visitor duty. The stylish manor houses and often over a hundred years old cellars will delight everyone.
In addition to dozens of charming hotels, the region also offers a unique opportunity directly to wineries ( "Eno-Turismo") or holiday homes within the vineyards to stay. The overnight stay in a traditional Quinta (vineyard) is an absolute highlight.
If you want more information about the Douro valley, I would like to recommend mytravel guide book "Das Douro-Tal", which was published in March 2016 (in german). The book is also availible on international markets like the USA and the UK.
